There were a number of songs from those albums that charted very high on the radio charts. The song, Rock Me, for example, remains to be a very popular song, even today. However, both Gillis and Watson had a role in shaping the way guitar would be played in the 1980s. In 1984, drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley was killed in a car accident (the car was driven by Motley Crue's Vince Neil). Their status as a true "hair band" is disputed by some, but there's no doubt they greatly influenced the genre and should be considered pioneers. The importance and impact of Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock” on ’80s rock in general and on glam metal in particular simply can not be over-shouted. Skid Row confirmed that they were metal first and glam maybe not at all anymore with Slave to the Grind in 1991. The same year Nirvana’s Nevermind is thought to have instantly and permanently put all hair-bands to pasture, Slave to the Grind debuted at #1.
KISS was also a little bit more of a different band than the previous era. Most notable is the fact that Ace Frehley wasn’t playing guitar, having been replaced by a string of different guitarists. Twisted Sister is one of those bands that made a dent in the world with their musical contributions. The band really employed the glam hair look, no doubt fueled by singer Dee Snider’s antics. It’s easy to dismiss this band, especially if you aren’t a fan of their smash hit song, Sister Christian.
Compared to other bands, Def Leppard had worldwide status and was really a phenomenon of the era. If you know about the band Europe, you probably have that classic synth melody running through your head. The song, The Final Countdown, has become a cultural phenomenon, even after all of this time. L.A. Guns is one of those original glam bands helping to plant the seed for what was to come.
Hanoi Rocks
The origins of glam metal can be traced back to the late 1970s when bands such as Kiss and Aerosmith began incorporating elements of glam rock into their music. While many big hair metal bands are now considered cheesy and dated, they remain iconic for their over-the-top style and catchy tunes. However, there was a thriving British glam metal scene in the 1980s. Some of the biggest names in British hair metal were Def Leppard, Wrathchild, and Whitesnake. Founded by the bassist Nikki Sixx and the drummer Tommy Lee in 1981, in Los Angeles, California. The band was considered a part of the first wave of the glam metal era.
Mötley Crüe was planning a huge reunion tour along with Def Leppard and Poison in the summer of 2020 but had to reschedule to 2021 due to COVID-19. Emerged as Firedone from Hollywood, California, in 1971, it changed its name to Ratt in 1976. The band’s first commercial success was a result of their song ranking no. 12 on Billboard’s Top 40.
On Dec. 23, 1987, Sixx was declared dead for two full minutes after a heroin overdose. Paramedics revived him and took him to the hospital, but he escaped to run home and immediately shoot up heroin again. Now, he says it's a "miracle" that he and the rest of the band are still alive. Hair metal was about excessive everything, including occasional dare-based misbehavior, to which Tommy Lee and Ozzy Osbourne can attest.
According to tour manager Noel E. Monk, Berle taped "several hours" of indiscretions, not surprisingly with Roth in "75 percent of the X-rated films." The GNR original lineup included original Tracii Guns on guitar — hence the name Guns N' Roses — but Guns says "things had become really intense in the band and I wasn't having fun anymore." He went back to his original band, L.A. It started on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip, around 1981 with Mötley Crüe leading the charge.
Cinderella’s music style is often described as a blend of hard rock, blues, and heavy metal. The hair band’s original lineup consisted of Tom Keifer (lead vocals, guitar), Eric Brittingham (bass guitar), Michael Smerick (guitar), and Tony Destra (drums). The band released several successful albums throughout the decade, including Tooth and Nail, Under Lock and Key, and Back for the Attack. BulletBoys’ music was a fusion of hard rock, glam metal, and funk, and they became known for their high-energy live performances.
Perhaps they were less glam, but they often carry the label of hair metal when their early music is referenced. Let's be careful not to confuse these glam metal bands of the '80s with their predecessors of the 1970s — glam rock. Though it should be noted that without Queen, David Bowie, or the like — '80s glam metal probably wouldn't exist. The genre enjoyed nearly 10 years of prominence, but near the end of the '80s, hair metal hit its saturation point. After Guns N' Roses released Appetite For Destruction in 1987, the number of clone bands hit an all-time high. The popular bands retained their fan bases, but there was no more room for newbies.
Another name that has become synonymous with 80s hair bands is the group called Ratt. You are probably familiar with their song, Round And Round, which still receives regular radio play on many stations. During the late 1980s, Great White toured with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Guns N’ Roses. Even today, the band remains fairly active, which is a rare sight for an 80s hair band.
